An industry pioneer for nearly fifteen years, ABOVE THE FOLD is an international agency with a focus on the built environment and the driving force behind some of today’s most recognized and influential talent, firms, and projects.
Founded by John Patrick in New York City in 2012 and based in Detroit since 2015, the agency approaches architecture as the art of economics™ and represents a diverse roster of talent and firms in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, photography, art, and related disciplines on securing new projects and public relations.
Responding to the opportunity and need to make contemporary design more accessible, ABOVE THE FOLD started curating design teams — an idea, approach, service, and term coined by John Patrick over the last decade — to seed some of Detroit’s most internationally recognized projects built in the first quarter of the 21st century. Projects like True North, The Shepherd, and Little Village, which have spurred tens of millions of dollars in neighborhood investment on both the east and west sides of Detroit.
On six continents and totaling billions in construction value, ABOVE THE FOLD has collaborated on 70+ public and private buildings and campuses for arts & culture, learning, leisure, living, recreation, wellness, and working, spanning both urban and natural contexts.

Business Development
For talent, ABOVE THE FOLD proactively performs out-of-house business development with an in-house mindset. Leveraging our network, insight, and skills, we have collaborated with clients on winning over USD$2 billion in projects while expanding their practices and portfolios. Representing and advising firms across all phases of business development, the agency’s services include new client/project research and cultivation, consultant/collaborator introductions, and RFQ/RFP production.
